Promotional Products and Business Gifts

Promotional products, business gifts, and other items that you use to advertise and promote your business all fall into your advertising and marketing budget. In most cases, the expense is tax deductible, and you should take advantage of that. Using promotional products is a common and useful way to get your company name and logo seen, but calculating the reach of these items is a little difficult because there is no way to track where they go and for how long they exist.

When you purchase something like a billboard, there are concrete figures as to how many people pass by that billboard daily, and even hourly, and you know for how many days that advertisement is up on the billboard, so you can roughly calculate your reach. Even with that, there is a variable because there is no way of knowing how many people are in a vehicle to see that ad. Likewise with print ads, you do not know how many people will read a magazine or newspaper.

With promotional product, business gifts, and other advertising specialties you are estimating how long they will last and how many other people will see such items. A logo mug may sit on a person’s desk, and be seen by a few people. A tee shirt could be seen by hundreds or thousands, as the wearer moves around town and to events.

In planning your purchase of promotional products, take some time to estimate the expected longevity of the item, the durability of the item, and the chances of where it will end up, and how many other people are likely to see that item. Something like a bumper sticker could be seen by hundreds or more. Laptop bags make nice business gifts, and will probably be taken around town and on trips, and they offer a nice size ad space, but the tee shirt may be more beneficial to you for reaching more people with your message.

In the end, all the different types of promotional items could have a place in your marketing plan, and there are different items to use for different objectives. If your budget is tight, and most are these days, consider what items will bring you the most return on your investment by reaching the greatest number of viewers. Although they are gifts, try to think advertising messages.
